Do we realize that our parent and grandparents hold so many ancient secrets that can be monetized and we are loosing them gradually.
Let me tell you a short story of how my mama saved my life and pocket lol.
Sometime ago I had whitlow as it is popularly called. We’ve all had it or at least known someone that had it, that painful thing that happens to your fingernail when you overbite a cuticle.
My hand was swollen, I was in so much pain I wouldn’t wish it on my enemy, pain killers were doing no good. I visited the hospital and was placed on antibiotics and painkillers it was the worst week of my life. After seeing no improvement I went back to the hospital and was told I had to have surgery as that was the only solution. A day was fixed and I went back home to get ready for my surgery pocket wise and emotion wise.
As the cry baby that I was, I picked up my phone and called my mama. In the typical dramatic Yoruba woman fashion she exclaimed “olohun maje a ri ogun surgery”… it means God forbid basically. She asked me to send a picture which I did.
This was what my finger looked like at the time
She then asked me to get three things
Three pieces of beans
One tiny potash (Kaun) as it is populary called
And a tablespoon of palmoil
Grind the beans and potash together and mix in the palmoil. Rub on the affected finger every fifteen minutes
You know when my mama told me this I couldn’t believe it, I mean why would I be going for surgery if it was this easy. But I was ready to try anything if it would help relieve the pain.
Guess what after about an hour of rubbing this mixture, the swollen finger busted open and the pus started flowing out. Oh my God what a relief, after about twenty minutes most of the pus was out and all I had to do was rub penicillin to heal up. In less than twenty four hours my finger was fine again.
The whole thing cost me less than 500 Naira and I was in pain for that long. If only I had called my mama earlier,
I hope this post helps someone out there and let us endeavor to ask our parents for their ancient secret recipes
